** PEOPLE PROBLEMS **
Recreational Disturbance
The role of disturbancemintentional or unintentionalmhas been given
considerable attention in loon management circles and has been
frequently identified as the number-one threat to loon population
stability. In nearly every state with a loon population, public
education efforts have been mounted to prevent the disturbance of
loons, especially during the nesting season. In Wisconsin, the line
"Leave the Loons Alone" became the battle cry of loon protectionists
with posters at boat landings, radio public service announcements,
newspaper articles and campground slide programs all echoing the
message. In New Hampshire, the issue was carried to its logical
extreme. To protect loons from people, ropes with floats were strung
across the mouths of bays or inlets to prevent boats from coming
near a nest site. The rationale for this separation of loons and people
was simple: boaters approaching the nest site dislodge the nesting
bird and leave the eggs vulnerable to chilling or predation.
Recent loon research, however, questions the conventional wisdom.
While it's certainly true that high levels of recreational activity near
nest sites can affect hatching and chick rearing success, long-term
recreational pressure is usually just one of many variables affecting
productivity. The issue of recreational disturbance deserves a close
review.
While loon researchers sounded the recreational alarm earlier, few
people in wildlife management listened until non-game wildlife
attracted the public's attention in the 1970s. A grass roots movement
to stop harassment of loons began in New Hampshire in 1974 and
quickly spread west.
